At the back of the first diary, which runs from 1895 to July
9th 1897, she writes that she is beginning a new book with
a lock. This she apparently finished in March 1898, but it
no longer exists. In it she probably poured out her heart
about Charles, and it may have been this that led to the action
her mother took later in 1898.

During 1898, Charles was serving in Sierra Leone,
another small colonial war that went largely unnoticed. Wynne cut
out the newspaper article that mentioned an action he was in, during
