Christmas may not have been that much fun at home, but the 1896 season in London seems to have been enjoyed by Wynne – here are some of the plays she managed to see…
The famous Gilbert and Sullivan Mikado – still going strong – and Wynne also enjoyed “The Shopgirl”, then in its second year, and starring Ellaline Terriss.
Wynne has written “angel” next to her name, and ass and ape next to most of the others!
Cinderella starred the famous Dan Leno – every Victorian and Edwardian child’s favourite in the pantomime…
and finally, everyone knows this one…
Wynne wrote of this: ” I can say here that it is the most excitable and interesting piece I have ever seen put on the stage, at one time it is so realistic that everybody jumps up with excitement! Oh, gracious, I should love to see it again. As for George Alexander (playing Rudolph the Fifth) he is too beautiful for words….”
