August has come and gone, a month of rain, wind and dull weather. Sept. has been prophisied (sic) to bring us very hot weather but I write this on the second and certainly so far it has shown no signs of arriving. I am utterly disgusted with our vile summer, a few days in June were indeed so boiling that we all nearly expired and that may be said to have been all the summer we have had.
The Coronation came off this month all right and H and I went up for it. The rain kept off which was a blessing as for such an event fine weather is essential. We started at 7.30 and got to our seats in Pall Mall quite comfortably without any undue crush. On arriving we had refreshments and watched the crowd until 12.0 when we had lunch for which I was more than thankful. The Procession didn’t pass until 2.0 so I was rather thankful when it was all over. We had a splendid view of everything and saw the King and Queen quite close. After all had passed we repaired to the United Services Club with some people called Beckett with whom we had tea. This was at 3.30 and at this unearthly hour there were lots of poor unfortunates there having lunch! I can’t think how they managed to do without food until so late, I should have died!
We have been plunging this month and invested in a cob and cart, both to my mind are eminently successful. The animal is a mare, about14.3, bright bay with black points, very splendid action and sound in wind and limb. She is a dear, so gentle and good, and I am trying to get her to eat out of my hands but nothing will induce her to take anything except from the manger.
Gran came on the 21st, the day before the visit of the Shah to Woolwich. On that day there was a large Review, all Artillery, and the whole place was in an uproar…Gran was immensely amused, I think she has “scarlet fever” worse than any of us!
