Many of these cards were sent home from France – they are machine-embroidered on cloth, and most contained patriotic symbols/colours/flags etc. The odd one out here is the card with a beautiful flap on which is embroidered a lucky horseshoe – the patriotic bit is the little card inside, a “souvenir de glorieuse memoire”, with its poignant “Remember Me” which for me evokes only Purcell and Dido’s terrible lament…Wynne’s favourite was the Forget Me Not card with the flags as flower petals. She notes by one of them “specimen of PC much patronised by Tommies”.
