Malindi was the last port of call for Vasco da Gama on his world-changing first exploratory journey to India. At various stopping places he left behind pillars, and the one at Malindi stands on a point named after him. The original, built in 1498, was destroyed but rapidly replaced. Below is the site as it was in 1929, and again in the sixties.
The lone figure is Ysobel (Noots) revisiting the spot nearly forty years after her first sight of it.
The pillar is now well maintained and is a tourist site.
