THE 1890’s
The end of the nineteenth century – notice all the things hanging from Blanche”s waist, and the narrowness of it. This must be around 1895 or perhaps a little later. You can read Wynne’s description of clothes from this period in the next window…
Wynne liked to make occasional entries about her clothes when she was younger. Later, from about 1911, she fell into the habit of cutting out and sticking into the back of each diary various new fashions, most of which she found eccentric or hilarious. Here is her entry made on November 23rd 1895 for a new skirt and blouse she had ordered – much of what she wore was made to measure by a local dressmaker, and shopping invariably involved looking for material, not made up clothes.
