February 1st – 6th
Wynne is in London enjoying the theatres. She manages to meet Herbert once. His departure date is announced.
February 9th – 17th
They hear Wynne’s brother has enlisted in India. Mother and daughter visit the “in-laws” and “behave immaculately”. Herbert sails for South Africa but encounters many problems, especially with the artillery horses.
February 18th – 28th
Herbert is finally at sea, M Battery having suffered one setback after another. The news of Cronje’s surrender arrives.
