Wynne’s visit to India
These are some of the houses Wynne stayed at in India. The word bungalow comes from India, and although some of the houses she mentions are more than one-storeyed, many were typical one-storey houses. Their smaller cousins were built all over Britain in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
Her drawings are from the 1898 diary – the first is of Dokraha, where her sister lived. This could easily be in the Home Counties – the others look a little more elaborate.
“…the Indian way of life is so funny, I find. We get up at 6 o’clock every day, have chota hasri, then write till 11.30 when we go to bath, redress for breakfast… “
